2010/11

La Liga Live

Barcelona claimed their 20th La Liga crown on the final day of the season finishing 3 points ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid. With players from both teams having played their part in Spain’s World Cup triumph, the competition to claim the 2010/11 La Liga title will be as hot as any seen before.

The big two secured UEFA Champions League qualification with third placed Valencia also qualifying for this seasons premier European club competition despite ending 2009/10 more than 20 points adrift. Another five Spanish clubs started the campaign with a shot at European glory either through UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds or the UEFA Europa League. Yet it will be the rivalry between the two major forces in Spain that will dominate, especially since the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Real manager.

Both teams can boast a whole host of stars with Valdes, Puyol, Messi, Xavi, David Villa and world Cup final hero Andres Iniesta plying their trade at the Camp Nou whilst Iker Casillas, who lifted the FIFA trophy, Sergio Ramos, and the little known double act of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo all know the Bernabau as their home ground.

Whether the likes of Sevilla, Valencia or Atletico Madrid can realistically challenge for La Liga title may depend more on the form and fitness of the aforementioned players than any performances by the latter.

A Brief History

La Liga began in the late 1920’s with 10 member clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid, neither of whom have ever been relegated since. Since then, it has grown into a world-wide phenomenon with audiences in their millions. Over 50 different teams have competed since it’s inception but less than ten have ever become champions with Barcelona and Real Madrid dominating with have a century of titles between them. The Spanish league has historically attracted some of the best talent on the planet and over the past couple of decades has seen the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Luis Figo, Romario, Rivaldo and Diego Maradona all grace the ground of the Spanish first division. The amount of money spent on securing the services of this amount of talent has probably exceeded the GDP of some of the smaller countries in the world. Yet the trend has continued with the recent transfers of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid. With the continued demands for success from the passionate and opinionated fans, it will no doubt continue.
