The Spanish La Liga, formally known as Liga de Fútbol Profesional, is the top professional football league in Spain.  It is also one of the world’s premier leagues.  In fact, it is the top professional football league in the UEFA ranking based on performance in a five-year period.  Average attendance of La Liga games is also one of the highest in the 2005-2006 world football records.

La Liga Structure and Privileges

La Liga is Spain’s premier (First Division) professional football league.  Under La Liga Primera (which is known simply as La Liga) is Second Division A.  Second Division B is next and it is followed by Spain’s Third Division.  Second Division B and Third Division are more amateur, though.  The La Liga tournaments are held every year from September to June.

All four top-ranking First Division La Liga teams automatically have slots in the UEFA Champions League.  The next two high-ranking teams also automatically qualify for the UEFA Cup.  Moreover, all First Division La Liga teams can apply for a spot in the UEFA Intertoto Cup.  The two top-ranking teams that are not playing in either the Champions League or the UEFA Cup will become La Liga’s representative in the Intertoto tournament.

La Liga Brief History

It all began in 1927 when Jose Maria Archa, director of one of Spain’s football clubs, thought of making a national football league.  The following year, La Liga was instituted and it had only 10 member clubs including Spain’s pride FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, both of which dominated La Liga games; they have never been demoted from the First Division, either.

From the time of its inception until now, the Spanish La Liga only stopped holding football games during the Spanish Civil war, though at this time, some league members played in other tournaments.

La Liga is undoubtedly one of the top football leagues in the world today.  It has played vital roles in international competitions, besting some of the greatest teams from all over the world.
