2010/11

The 2010/11 Bundesliga season’s opening fixtures included defending champions Bayern Munich against 2009 champions Wolfsburg. Bayern claimed their 22nd German domestic title last year along with the German Cup but narrowly failed to complete the treble, losing out to Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final.

Bayern Munich will again start as favourites with a squad that includes the likes of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben as well as German international striker Miroslav Klose and fellow forward Mario Gomez. Coach Louis van Gaal continues at the helm and will look to go one better in Europe this time around and will expect midfield duo Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mark van Bommel to play key roles.

Former champions Wolfsburg have appointed former England boss Steve McClaren to refresh their fortunes after he led FC Twente to their first Eredivisie title only five years after securing English club Middlesbrough their first ever trophy. Amongst the other notable signings are former Germany captain Michael Ballack who has rejoined Bayer Leverkusen following being released by Chelsea and Spanish striker Raul who will play at Schalke under coach Felix Magath.

Hamburg could also challenge under new boss Armin Veh and with talent such as Ruud van Nistelrooy and Piotr Trockowski to call upon, they are capable of maintaining their form better than last year.

A Brief History

The Bundesliga as it now is was formed in 1962 after many failed attempts to produce a professional German football league. FC Koln won the first championship season but the development of the league was hampered by the revelation that the 1970/71 season had been marred by match fixing. The subsequent investigation and resultant punishments handed out to individuals marred the reputation of the league and fans stayed away in their thousands. West Germany’s World Cup win on home soil in 1974 marked a revival in the game and German clubs started to attract players from further-a-field such as Kevin Keegan who joined from Liverpool.

The early 1990’s saw the reunification of East and West Germany and the new look Bundesliga once again rose in prominence. Unfortunately, the turn of the century brought another match-fixing scandal but the offenders including a referee were banned from the game and imprisoned. Despite the scandals that have dogged the German game, the Bundesliga has consistently been rated as one of the strongest leagues in world football producing successful teams and domestic players capable of winning both European Championships and World Cups. Fans continue to flock to games and it’s popularity now reaches all outposts of the footballing world.
