The club celebrated its centenary year in 2005 and has had more success on the European front than in domestic football. Sevilla has won 4 Copa del Rey titles and a single La Liga title. The club has also won the UEFA Cup twice and the UEFA Super Cup once. Currently the team is managed by Manalo Jimenez and will be taking part in the UEFA Cup after finishing fifth in the league last season. History
The club was formed on October 15th 1905 and was officially announced by the Civil Governor of Seville. The club played its first official match three years later against Recreativo Huelva. By 1914, Sevilla FC had become a regional force and won its first major trophy in 1912 by lifting the Copa de Sevilla. ![]() The club dominated the newly organized Copa Andalusia and won 16 of the 19 cups held between 1915 and 1934. The club invited to play in the inaugural season of second division of the newly created Spanish League. Sevilla finished champions that season, but did not gain promotion to the first division. The club spent five more seasons in the second division before winning it once again in 1934. This time Sevilla was promoted to the first division and finished just one point above the relegated Atletico Madrid. In 1935, Sevilla proved that it can be a national force by winning its first Copa del Rey defeating CE Sabadell 3-0 in the final. The Spanish Civil War proved to be the turning point in the club's history as it won the inaugural Copa del Generalísimo (Copa del Rey) in 1940 and finished runners-up in the league. After two inconsistent seasons, which saw the club finish 5th and 7th, Sevilla once again came second in the league in 1943 and finished 3rd the next season. Sevilla won its first and only La Liga title in 1945 thanks largely to striker Oli Ward who smashed home an astounding 29 goals in 26 matches. Three years later the club won its third Copa del Rey title by defeating Celta Vigo 4-1 in the final. The club spent the next three decades in mid table obscurity, with inconsistent performances seeing them finish as high as 2nd in 1951 to as low as 13th in 1967. Sevilla also finished as runners-up in the Copa del Rey twice in 1955 and 1962. The club was relegated to the second division in 1968 after finishing last in the league. ![]() However they went straight up after winning the division that season. But the club was again relegated three seasons later and spent four years in the second division before gaining promotion in 1975. The club spent the next 20 years in the first division without any distinction, with the highest position being 5th in 1983 and 1995. After a poor season in 1996, which saw the club finish 12th, Sevilla FC was relegated to the second division in 1997. Though the club managed to gain promotion in 1999, it was unable to hold on to its place in the first division and was relegated again in 2000. The club finished as champions of the second division in 2001 and gained promotion to the first division, where it has improved its position every season. The club finished 8th in its comeback season and followed it up with a 10th place finish the next season. In 2003-04 season Sevilla finished 6th in the league and maintained that position in the next season. The 2005-06 season proved to be one of the best in the club's history. While it finished 5th in the league (missing out on a Champions League spot to Osasuna due to poor head-to-head results), Sevilla won the UEFA Cup for the first time in its history. Sevilla defeated German powerhouse Schalke 04 with an extra time goal and then won the final by defeating Middlesbrough 4-0. Sevilla's dream run in Europe continued with a 3-0 victory over Champions League winners Barcelona in the UEFA Super Cup played on August 25, 2006. 2006/7 proved even better for the club as it booked a place in the UEFA Champions League by finishing third in La Liga, just five points behind champions Real Madrid. Sevilla successfully defended its UEFA Cup crown, defeating Steaua Bucharest, Shakhtar Donetsk, Tottenham Hotspur, and Osasuna to take part in its second UEFA Cup final against RCD Espanyol. The club came out victorious for the second season running, defeating Espanyol on penalties. ![]() The club completed a cup double by lifting the Copa del Rey for the first time in 59 years. Sevilla defeated Rayo Vallecano, arch rivals Real Betis and Deportivo La Coruña en route to the final against Getafe. An 11th minute goal from Frederic Kanoute was enough for the club to lift its 4th Copa del Rey title in its history. Season 2007-08
Sevilla managed to hold on to the core of the team from the previous season, with just three players leaving the club in the summer. The club sold David and Aitor Ocio to Levante and Athletic Bilbao respectively while Cobeño was sent on a year long loan to Almería. The club brought in six new players including the signing of Chelsea's Khalid Boulahrouz on a one year loan and buying Udinese keeper Morgan De Sanctis. The club was expected to perform well in the league and finish in the top four at the end of the season. However, the season started in tragic circumstances from which the club did not fully recover. In their match against Getafe, Antonio Puerta suddenly collapsed on the pitch and had to be substituted after regaining consciousness. However, he collapsed again in the dressing room and was rushed to hospital. 3 days later, his death was announced at the age of just 22, the victim of an inherited and incurable heart defect. Less than a week later, the European Super Cup game went ahead with both AC Milan and Seville bearing Puerta’s name on their shirts. Milan’s 3-1 victory hardly mattered as the game was considered by all as a tribute to Seville’s fallen hero. October saw the resignation of Juande Ramos who decided to see the sights of North London and departed to the English Premiership to manage Tottenham Hotspur. With Manalo Jimenez taking the reigns Seville attempted to recover from the loss of Puerta but ultimately couldn’t match the heights of previous seasons, finishing fifth in La Liga and missing out on Champions League football again on goal difference. Fenerbahce had ended their interest in the same competition earlier in the season and 2008/9 could probably not come quick enough . Jimenez has built on a strong base by adding the likes of Romaric, Acosta, Konko and Fernando Navarro to the squad. With the fundamental spine of his team intact and with the continuing form of Freddie Kanoute, there is no reason why those who enjoy to watch Seville live will not see fireworks again this season. ![]() Seville will play in La Liga and in the UEFA Cup this season.
