![]() Taking its cue from the English Premier League, clubs within the Scottish Football League left and formed their own system, called the Scottish Premier League in 1998 – six years after the formation of the English Premier League. The Scottish Premier League is sponsored by the Bank of Scotland, making its official sponsored name the Bank of Scotland Premier League. The Bank of Scotland will, however, not be going forth into the 2007-08 season with their sponsorship – the Clydesdale Bank sealed their sponsorship deal starting in July 2007.

However, a second Scottish Premier League is not a popular idea with some fans of both the original Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League. There are, however, many fans that do support the idea and the formation may take place during the 2007-08 season.
