Scottish Premier League
If it is dramatic last-day title deciders you want, the Scottish Premier League (SPL) is the place to look. Since its inception in 1998/99, the SPL has been won by one or other of the Glasgow giants, Celtic or Rangers. But the number of times the big two have been locked together until the last day – even the last minute on two memorable occasions – makes the SPL an exciting and popular competition. You can watch all the action from the SPL live inside our member’s area. Sign up today with Live Sport Network – the number one source for football streaming online.
The formation of the SPL mirrored that of the EPL six years earlier and it is now one of the most popular of the European leagues, based on the number of people watching its games per head of the Scottish population.
Much of this is fuelled by the age-old rivalry between Celtic and Rangers, clubs which represent the two predominant religious traditions in Scotland’s largest city. This rivalry is more intense than any in European club football, with the possible exception of Barcelona and Real Madrid. And whilst this intensity leads to its own problems, it has also produced derby matches between the “Old Firm” which are unrivalled in passion, drama, spectacle and excitement.
The Celtic/Rangers duopoly is being increasingly threatened in these tougher economic times by the so-called smaller clubs in Scotland, such as the capital city’s big two sides, Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian and Aberdeen and Dundee United, whose names became famous throughout Europe in the 1980s, Aberdeen’s under the managerial guidance of a certain Alex (now Sir Alex) Ferguson.
The latter two clubs were styled the “new firm” because of their successes. And their attempts to recapture the glory days have provided exciting competition for European places towards the end of the SPL season, when the top six teams break away to play each other and finalise Scottish domestic football’s pecking order.
This end-of-season arrangement has provided many high quality matches and gripping drama, not least on the final day of the 2002/03 season when Rangers pipped Celtic to the title by one goal and in 2004/05 when Celtic were on top of the table until two goals in the last three minutes consigned them to a 2-1 defeat at Motherwell which denied them the win they needed to clinch the title.
This season’s title race promises to be just as tight and could easily be more than a two-horse race, as the chasing pack has closed the gap with the Old Firm in recent seasons.
And where better to watch the drama unfold than online with our network providing live streaming football and live football feeds throughout the SPL season. Don’t miss out on the Scottish Premier League this season – and if you keep watching, you’ll likely become an SPL fan for life!
