Alan Shearer was unable to prevent Newcastle falling out of the Premier League last year and an immediate return to the top flight is the priority on Tyneside. The summer dealings have seen players such as Damien Duff depart for Fulham, Obafemi Martins head east to Bundesliga Champions Wolfsburg, and Michael Owen leave on a free to sign for Manchester United. Peter Lovenkrands and loan-signing Danny Simpson have arrived on Tyneside but the Championship may prove much tougher to leave than it was to join. Chris Hughton remains in charge as caretaker manager assisted by the experienced Colin Calderwood. With the joint issues of ownership and management still not revolved, the uncertain future at St James Park cannot be allowed to filter through onto the pitch as it undoubtedly did during 2008/9. It will be down to the players to show a professional attitude to both. The Geordies retain the services of some high profile professionals including Joey Barton, Kevin Nolan, Alan Smith, Nicky Butt and Shola Ameobi and the Premier League experience should be vital in providing the necessary guile to see that their first season in the Championship is their last for a good while. With the added stimulus of an equally-determined local rival Middlesbrough also competing for a Premier League return, and in the knowledge that Wear-side neighbours Sunderland are currently the only North East representative in the top flight, there should be no lack of desire to seek a top two finish. ![]() A Brief History
The rivalry of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End in the 1880’s ended in 1892 when West End folded and were taken over by East who were renamed Newcastle United. The ground used by West was also taken over and became Newcastle United’s home, St James Park. The Magpies joined the Football League and won three titles very early between 1905 and 1909. They also appeared in five FA Cup finals in 1905, 1906, 1908, 1910 and 1911, winning in 1910. Further success followed in 1924 with another FA Cup and in 1927 with a further league title.
It wasn’t until the 1950s that they once again tasted success, lifting the FA Cup five times. The team featured such greats as the legendary Jackie Milburn and Bobby Mitchell. The Fairs Cup (latterly the UEFA Cup) was landed in 1968 but this was to prove their last success. Despite major signings such as Andy Cole and Alan Shearer and high profile managers like Kevin Keegan, trophies remained just out of reach. Champions League football and FA Cup finals were enjoyed by the Toon Army but each venture ended in ultimate disappointment. The takeover by Mike Ashley who promised to strengthen the squad and plough millions into the club has proven disastrous with in-fighting, resignations, protests and ultimately relegation. Off-the-field drama’s have taken the emphasis off on-the -field performances. All fans of Newcastle United will be hoping that football will once again become top of the agenda with success the main goal. Watch Newcastle United Live
