French Ligue 1
At a time when the French national side, Les Bleus, is suffering from an extreme case of “the blues” after a wretched World Cup in South Africa, it has fallen upon the teams from France’s domestic football championship, Ligue 1, to restore some pride to the nation’s football.
The performances of Bordeaux and Lyon in last season’s UEFA Champions League did just that, with Lyon’s defeat of the much-vaunted Real Madrid side a particular highlight. Lyon later eliminated Bordeaux 3-2 on aggregate on their way to a place in the semi-finals, gaining a modicum of revenge The domestic competition was one of the tightest in Europe before Olympique Marseille eventually saw off challenges from Lyon, Auxerre and Lille.

This season’s competition promises to be another open one, with the possibility of four different champions in four years – a relief after Lyon’s seven-year dominance since the turn of the century.
The one significant managerial change has been Bordeaux boss Laurent Blanc nominal promotion to take the poisoned chalice that is currently the French national team manager’s job. But his replacement is another French footballing legend Jean Tigana, the former Fulham manager returning to the game after a three-year absence. So Bordeaux should not be too badly hit by the change in personnel.
Alain Casanova’s Toulouse made the early running with an unblemished record after four games, with the unfancied Rennes, Montpelier and Sochaux among the early pace-setters. Lorient and Nancy are also teams to watch, as they are hosting matches on artificial surfaces, a first for French league football.

A Brief History
Ligue 1 saw the first Champions, Olympique Lillios, crowned in 1932/33. Since then, the balance of power in France has never been retained for long. Indeed, the recent run of seven consecutive titles by Lyon – their only titles - is a record for French football with even the greats such as Marseille, Saint Etienne, Monaco and Nantes only able to boast four championships on the bounce at best. This record may have been bettered but for the match-fixing scandal of 1992/3 that saw Marseille stripped of what would have been their fifth straight title. As a result of what was the third such incident in the history of the French game, the Gallic game is now probably one of the most highly regulated in football.
St-Etienne still jointly hold the record for the highest number of titles although they won their tenth and last one more than 25 years ago. They won eight of their titles in their golden era from 1964 to 1976, and their 1981 title-winning side included in their line-up one Michel Platini, UEFA’s current president. Marseilles’ 2010 triumph was their tenth title.
