LA Galaxy fell just short last season, losing to Real Salt Lake on penalties after drawing 1-1- in the MLS Cup Final. They moved on from 2008 when Houston Dynamo’s ended their play-off hopes early on. However, coach Bruce Arena will hope that his teams form so far will carry them all the way this time around.
The torn Achilles sustained by playmaker David Beckham’s during his extended loan spell at Inter Milan not only cost him his place on England’s World Cup squad but robbed Galaxy of their biggest name player. Landon Donovan, fresh from his own successful loan spell in the Premier League at Everton and the US leading all-time goal-scorer, has continued to inspire his team-mates in Beckham’s absence and Galaxy currently lead the MLS West Conference.
Brazilian Juninho arrived from Sao Paulo and Chris Birchall, formerly of English club Brighton & Hove Albion, remains a stalwart of the squad. It is the return of Beckham from injury, however, that could prove the added boost to the squad as it seeks to claim a play-off berth and aim at the MLS crown. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has returned quicker than originally thought and will be fresh and raring to go after the disappointment of the injury and World Cup.
A Brief History
The club is based in Los Angeles, and is named so because of the galaxy of stars who reside there. The city has had plenty of soccer teams in the past- the Los Angeles Kickers, the Los Angeles Wolves and the Los Angeles Aztecs for example. Unfortunately, none of these teams were really able to sustain themselves in the long run, and ceased to exist soon. The LA Galaxy is a relatively young team by modern standards, having been established in 1995 to take part in the MLS. Today, it is one of the most famous teams in the MLS, if not the most famous one. This is almost certainly due to the signing of England midfielder David Beckham, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, who is one of the most recognisable faces in the world of football.
Due to their location, the Galaxy play in the Western Conference. They kept the fans riveted, winning their first twelve games and then struggling in midseason before recovering to win the Western Conference. They lost the MLS Cup 2-3 to D.C.United. Their success in their debut season could be attributed to the hard work put in by striker Eduardo Hurtado, midfielders Mauricio Cienfuegos and Cobi Jones, and defenders Robin Fraser and Dan Calichman. To the world, a very clear message was sent- "We are not here just to fill the numbers, but to win trophies."
The 1997 season saw them finish second in the Western Conference behind the Kansas City Wizards. The following season, they won the Western Conference, but were eliminated in the MLS Cup playoffs by eventual champions Chicago Fire. They notched up 24 wins, a record matched by D.C.United in the same season, and won the MLS Supporters' Shield. Result wise, the 1999 season was a repeat of 1996. They won the Western Conference and lost the MLS Cup to D.C. United. Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman had an outstanding season, allowing less than one goal per game. He was rightly named MLS goalkeeper of the year.
The Galaxy had earned a spot in the 2000 CONCACAF Cup as a result of their performances the season before. They won it by beating Honduran club Olimpia in the final. The win saw them qualify for the 2001 FIFA World Club Championship in Spain, but that tournament ended up being cancelled without a single ball being kicked. They finished second in the Western Division behind the Kansas City Wizards and lost to Chicago Fire in the last four of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The 2001 season saw them win the Western Conference and navigate through the playoffs to have a showdown with the San Jose Earthquakes for the Major League Soccer Cup. Galaxy took the lead through Luis Hernandez, but the Earthquakes equalised through Landon Donovan. Overtime saw Dwayne De Rosario score the winning goal for the Earthquakes. In the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, they cruised past Nashville Metros and Sounders Select before meeting their first major opposition in form of the Earthquakes. They won the quarterfinal game 10-9 on penalties. The semi finals saw them extract revenge on Chicago Fire for their defeat at the same stage the previous year, and they went all the way by beating New England Revolution in the final.
2002 saw them comfortably win the Western Conference with 51 points, and their second Supporters' Shield. MVP and Golden Boot winner Carlos Ruiz's 113th minute goal at the Gillette Stadium saw them overcome New England Revolution for the MLS Cup. They reached the final of the U.S. Open Cup too, but fell at the last hurdle, losing 0-1 to Colombus Crew.
The 2003 season was a disappointing one. They finished second from bottom in the Western Conference and had their campaign in the MLS Cup halted by San Jose Earthquakes. Chicago Fire stopped them in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup. In 2004, they had to settle for being second best to Kansas City, both in the Western Conference regular season and the conference final in the MLS Cup. Kansas eventually lost the MLS Cup to D.C. United. Galaxy were upset by Minnesota Thunder in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
A win in the MLS Cup made up for a disappointing regular season. A goal from Guillermo Ramirez in extra time at Pizza Hut Park was enough for them to beat the New England Revolution and win a spot in the 2006 CONCACAF Cup. They also won the U.S. Open Cup, beating Dallas in the final. It was Galaxy who ended Minnesota's wonderful run in the semi-finals.
They had a disappointing league season in 2006, and did not qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs. They reached the finals of the U.S. Open Cup but lost to Chicago Fire. 2007 did not result in any additions to the trophy cabinet- a poor performance in the league and a third round U.S Open Cup exit at the hands of Richmond was all they had to show for their efforts. They however did manage to reach the finals of the inaugural North American SuperLiga, where they were beaten by Mexican side Pachuca on penalties.
