New Inter boss, former Liverpool and Valencia supremo Rafael Benitez has to fill European club football’s biggest boots (and many would say hat) in the self-proclaimed ‘special one’ Jose Mourinho who led the club to three Serie A titles (‘lo Scudetto) and the 2010 UEFA Champions League crown.

Benitez will still have many of that sides’ star names at his disposal, notably strikers Diego Milito the two-goal hero of the Champions League final,  and Samuel Eto’o, mercurial Dutch midfield star of this summer’s World Cup Finals, Wesley Sneijder, alongside influential holding midfielder Argentine Esteban Cambiasso,aformidable rearguard including Brazilian right-back Maicon, South American centre-back pairing the Brazilian Lucio and Uruguayan Walter Samuel in front of Lucio’s compatriot Julio Cesar in goal.

The defence could also be Benitez’s greatest worry as most of its constituent parts are the wrong side of 30, some by quite some way.

And whether Benitez himself can overcome the traumas of his latter days at Anfield in the EPL could be pivotal to Inter’s season.

Inter Milan was founded in 1908 and since they first began playing in Serie A, they have never left the top tier of Italian football - the only team to boast such a record. One of their earliest stars was Giuseppe Meazza who still holds the record for most goals scored in Serie A for Inter. His record of two-hundred and forty-five goals in 348 appearances remains a remarkable feat and the San Siro Stadium, named after its location, is more accurately known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Under the leadership of their owner, Angelo Moratti, and legendary Argentine coach Helenio Herrera with his famed ‘catenaccio’ (trans: doorbolt) defensive system, Inter won three Italian championships in four years in the 1960s. They went on to win two consecutive European Cups. However, they never dominated domestic football again and were somewhat overshadowed by neighbours AC. Inter were awarded their next Serie A title when a match-fixing scandal rocked Italian football.

But they returned to the glory days of the 60s with four further consecutive titles under managers Roberto Mancini and Mourinho. And previously elusive European success came their way when the UEFA Champions League formed the major part of Inter’s 2010 ‘treble’, alongside Serie A and Coppa Italia triumphs.
