The return of Hearts playing and management legend Jim Jefferies to the Tynecastle hot seat last January, replacing the dismissed Csaba Laszlo, has kept fans hopes alive of a challenge for the serious Scottish honours this season, especially given the on and off field problems besetting both Glasgow giants. As has been the case in recent years, the attitude of Lithuanian club owner Vladimir Romanov will be key to Hearts’ success, or otherwise, over the next nine months. Life at Tynecastle has never been run-of-the-mill under Romanov. And this year promises more of the same. Jefferies oversaw improved form over the later stages of last season and will expect an improvement on Hearts’ sixth place finish, with European qualification a minimum. He made five signings during the summer. The most notable of these was his reunion with Kevin Kyle on a two-year deal from Kilmarnock where he played a significant role in the events which saw Jefferies depart Rugby Park prior to re-joining Hearts. Jefferies had made Kyle Killie captain. And Kyle was outspoken in support of Jefferies. If that loyalty and support translates into on-field performances by the striker, Hearts fans have cause for optimism.
![]() A Brief History
Heart of Midlothian Football Club, better known as Hearts, have been part of Scottish Football officially since 1874, although there reports of games being played before this time. Several stories exist about the name from a dance hall, a building which housed a prison and gallows in the 1600’s, and the mosaic on the Royal Mile which is the badge which players still wear on their shirts today. They won the Edinburgh FA Cup in 1878 and moved to their home ground Tynecastle in 1896. After the creation of The Scottish Football League in 1890, they remained a successful side, becoming Champions for the first time in the 1894-95 season and retaining their title the following year. They had also found success in the Scottish cup with two cups having been won before the turn of the century. However, from the turn of the 20th century, Hearts only managed two Scottish Cup wins during the next fifty years. From 1954, Hearts became a force once again and for the next decade were successful with 2 League Championships. Their 1957-58 season remains a record as they recorded a total of 62 points, with 132 goals scored and only 29 against in 34 matches. They also won 4 Scottish League Cups and a Scottish Cup, but once again found

themselves lacking any longevity at the top. A combination of wages being paid by English clubs and the commencement of a 10 team top league meant that Hearts spent much time after 1964 making little impact apart from being relegated and promoted between the top two divisions of Scottish football. Hearts became a forgotten club for many years until the arrival of Wallace Mercer as chairman which saw the club only fail to win the league in 1986 on goal difference and follow with a runners up spot in 1988. Since then, Hearts have enjoyed little success and only have a further two competition cups, won in the mid 90’s under Manager Jim Jeffries, to show for their work. The last few years though have been probably the most turbulent of the clubs history with problems presenting behind the scenes, with many changes in staff and the arrival of Vladimir Romanov as owner early in 2005. Along with this the team enjoyed entry into the qualification phase of the Champions League after finishing 2nd in the 2005-06 season, only to fail to progress into the League and also have a poor run in the UEFA Cup. Hearts eventually finished the 2006-07 season in fourth place with nothing to show in terms of silverware after not being able to retain the Scottish Cup they had won the season prior. Many fans have become quite disillusioned by events since Romanov took charge and off-the-field controversy has often out-weighed on-the-field success. Hearts even failed to make the SPL’s top six in 2008 and despite a third-place finish in 2009, managerial changes have been frequent. Hearts fans will be hoping that Jefferies’ return provides the stability required for greater success in the future. Watch Hearts Live
