The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the main tournament held between the North, Central and Caribbean football associations – the CONCACAF states. You can watch all the matches of what usually proves to be an exciting competition live online via Live Sports Network.
The inaugural Gold Cup was won by hosts USA who beat Honduras on penalties. Mexico then went on to a hat-trick on wins in ’93, ’96 and ’98, including a famous victory over guest entrants Brazil, but were denied a fourth consecutive victory by Canada in 2000. Mexico and the USA have subsequently been the only winners since then with the US’s 2002 and 2005 victories having sandwiched the 2003 Mexican triumph. Current holders are the USA having beaten Mexico in 2007.
This year’s tournament sees the 3 groups consisting of a variety of teams from the continents. Group 1 sees the Canadians take on Jamaica alongside Costa Rica and El Salvador. The holders face Grenada, Haiti and Honduras in Group 2 whilst Mexico will play Panama, Nicaragua and Guadeloupe.
A disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign saw the Canadians change manager and new boss Stephen Hart will be looking to start his reign on a positive note with a good Gold Cup performance. He guided the team to a semi-final berth last time but will be without a couple of key players who have stayed behind at their domestic clubs. Ever-present Costa Rica will offer tough resistance whilst El Salvador has also found recent form. Jamaica, led by Theodore Whitmore, replacement for John Barnes after failure to qualify to South Africa 2010, complete a strong group.
USA will be hot favourites to retain their title but first they must get past the smallest nation to qualify, Grenada. Haiti were a late addition to the line up following Cuba’s withdrawal from the tournament, but Honduras are still in with a shout of reaching South Africa and will be a major challenger to the USA.
Mexico always put on a strong performance in the Gold Cup and 2009 should be no different. Having won 28 of their 39 matches played in the competition, El-Tri will be confident of making further ground against first-timers Nicaragua although Guadeloupe, with it’s French influence, may provide sterner opposition as will Central American champions Panama who complete the Group 3 line-up.
The live football to be played in North America this summer should make very interesting viewing for all football fans. The competition for the title should be tight and whilst Canada, Mexico and the USA will all feel that they can win, there may well be one of two upsets along the way. The final, to be held on 26th July at Giants Stadium, will generate just as much passion for those involved as the World Cup or Confederations Cup does. You can be part of it, and the whole tournament, from the comfort of your own armchair by watching Gold Cup live football via Live Sports Network.
