The UEFA Executive Committee received five bids competing to host the Euro 2012 with Poland/Ukraine and Croatia/Hungary putting up two joint bids along with Italy, Greece and Turkey. The first round of voting saw the elimination of Turkey and Greece and though Italy had garnered maximum votes in the first round, it was the joint bid by Poland and Ukraine which received the absolute majority of eight votes in the second round.
Euro 2012 Qualification
With Poland and Ukraine taking up two of the 16 spots in the Euro 2012 tournament, the remaining 14 places will be hotly contested by 51 teams across Europe. The qualification campaign has been divided into nine groups with the first six groups having six teams while the remaining three groups contain five countries.
While the winner of each group guarantees an automatic place in the tournament along with the best second placed team, the remaining eight countries will take part in the play-offs to be played on November 11/12 and November 15 2011. Following the controversy during the 2010 World Cup qualification, UEFA has declared in advance that the draw for the play-offs will be seeded.
Teams To Watch Out For
Defending champions Spain have been picked in a relatively straightforward group but manager Vicente del Bosque will be making sure that his side does not take either Czech Republic or Scotland lightly. England too should have no problems qualifying to the tournament after being grouped with Switzerland, Bulgaria, Wales and Montenegro.
Russia and Italy though will have a tough fight on hand if they are to appear in the tournament. While Russia will have to fare better than Republic of Ireland, Slovakia and Macedonia, Italy have been drawn in a tougher group with Serbia, Slovenia and Northern Ireland keen to take full advantage of the Azzurri’s disastrous World Cup campaign by denying them a place in Euro 2012.
