The Confederations Cup has a relatively recent history. In 1985 and 1993, the winners of the UEFA Euro Championship and of the Copa America contested against each other for the Artemio Franchi Trophy, which is thought to be the predecessor to this tournament.
In 1992 and 1995, this trophy was called the King Fahd Cup and was contested by the Saudi national side along with some of the winners of continental tournaments like the CAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA, AFC, OFC and CONCACAF.
However in 1997, FIFA took over the organization of this tournament and started conducting it every two years under the name FIFA Confederations Cup. From 2005 onward, the tournament is being held every four years. It is held one year prior to the World Cup at the same venue of the latter and is considered to be a dress rehearsal for the eventual hosts of the World Cup. Eight teams are divided into two groups and play each other once in the group stage. The top two teams in each group contest the semi-finals with the winners going into the finals and the losers playing for a third-placed finish. Wednesday 10 February 2010
