Gary Megson’s brief will be very much along the lines of maintaining the type of form that took Bolton into Europe as opposed to the lack of form that has seen them flirt dangerously with the relegation battle. The squad has been strengthened by the addition of Zat Knight from Aston Villa and Sam Ricketts from Hull City. Both will add to the defence and will provide a solid back up to another new signing, Sean Davis, who joined from Portsmouth. However, it will be form of veteran striker Kevin Davies that will be the critical factor in how Bolton’s season ultimately pans out.
Davies, Wanderer’s 2009 Player of the Year, weighed in with twelve vital goals last year in addition to leading the line and making his presence felt amongst Premier League defences. Indeed, there will not be too many Premiership defenders who enjoy playing against the former Southampton man. At the other end of the pitch, long-serving keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen has been rewarded with a testimonial for his 12 years service and over 400 games for the club. The Finnish star continues to play an important role for his club and his performances have won more than a few points during his time at the Reebok stadium.
Megson will be hoping that fitness and form are two items not missing from the season of both players. Bolton will look to progress towards a Europa League place for the season.
A Brief History
The club was formed by the Vicar of Christ Church Sunday School, Bolton, when he created an outdoor recreational club in 1874, and three years later, they were to be re-named Bolton Wanderers. They moved to Burnden Park, their home for the next century, and enjoyed success in 1923 when they won the first-ever Wembley FA Cup final beating West Ham Utd 2-0. They have subsequently gone on to win a further three FA Cups, the last of which in 1958 starred a certain Nat Lofthouse, one of the legends of the English game.
The club entered a long period of bouncing between the divisions before the mid-nineties saw them win the First Division (then the second tier of English football) with a record number of points and goals and re-entered the Premier League with a new stadium - the Reebok. Bolton’s recent progress has seen them reach the Carling Cup Final in 2004 only to lose to Middlesbrough. They have played UEFA Cup football and have retained their Premier League status becoming one of the more reliable sides in the top flight. Despite recent struggles they are now entering their 11th season in this, their second spell in the EPL. And under the tutelage of talented manager Owen Coyle, Bolton will be eyeing more than mere survival in 2010/11.
