A return to winning ways is the biggest challenge for new coach Louis van Gaal. Bayern had a poor season by their standards, struggling domestically and exiting the Champions League at the quarter final stage. This resulted in coach Jurgen Klinsmann losing his job before the end of the season. The 2007/8 champions eventually finished runners up to Wolfsburg but van Gaal will be expected to take the Bavarian side back to the top of the domestic league and into the last four of the European competition at worst. The securing of the services of Stuttgart’s top scorer Mario Gomez may assist on that front as may the signings of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben.

The new additions to the squad coupled with van Gaal’s proven track record should enable Bayern to challenge for the domestic title as well as putting up a good showing in the Champions League. However, as with all Bayern coaches, the pressure will be on from the off to show that the team means business this year. 

Bayern Munich was founded in 1900 but took until the 1930s until they established themselves as a championship-winning side World War 2 interrupted the clubs progress, partially due to Jewish involvement in their ownership. It wasn’t until the formation of the present-day Bundesliga that Bayern really found the secret to success.

Led by players such as national hero Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller, the team became a force, winning four titles in the 1970s including three in a row. They also finished their 1974 Bundesliga triumph off with a European Cup win, the first of a trio of European Cup / Champions League victories.

The 1980s’ saw even greater dominance with five Bundesliga championships in six years and a further title under Beckenbauer himself, who returned as a head coach before becoming club President.

The club has remained at the top of German football and the expectation of continued success from inside the club and on the terraces can often lead to short tenancies in the role of head coach.

Because of their wide-spread success, Bayern Munich is one of the few teams in the German Bundesliga that can afford to have a modern-day stadium like the Allianz Arena.
