AC Milan finished 2009/10 in a distant third place behind city rivals, the all-conquering Inter, which cost Brazilian coach Leonardo his job. His replacement, former Cagliari boss Massimiliano Allegri will have his work cut out re-shaping an ageing squad to challenge Serie A’s current big two of Inter and Roma. ![]() Last year, Milan struggled to deal with the departure of star midfielder Kaka to Real Madrid, and the retirement of legendary veteran defender Paolo Maldini. This year, the Rossoneri’s ranks have been boosted by big-money signing Robinho, brought to the San Siro after an unhappy spell at big-spending EPL outfit Manchester City, and the loan acquisition of Barcelona misfit Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had joined the Catalan giants from Inter two years ago. Also new to the Giuseppe Meazza stadium is Ghana World Cup star Kevin Prince-Boateng, who initially joined on loan from Genoa, having left EPL bottom club Portsmouth, and is now co-owned by the two Italian sides. Allegri’s side should not, therefore, be short of goals or creativity – despite the departure of Dutch forward Klaus Van Huntelaar after just one season.. But they will still be reliant on an experienced (I.e. ‘old’) hardcore of big names such as Alessandro Nesta, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf and Ronaldinho. Allegri will have to get the best out of these ageing legs if Milan are going to win their first Italian title in seven years, an unthinkable gap for such a successful club over the last three decades. And you can see how he fares, here with us on the Live Sports Network. ![]() A Brief History AC Milan was formed in 1899 and won a title within two years of its formation. The club is known as ‘Milan’ rather than the city’s Italian name. Milano, in honour of its origins as a club formed by Englishmen Alfred Edwards and Herbert Kilpin. The club survived an early 20th-century split over the acquisition of foreign players, which led to the formation of the appropriately named ‘International’ football club, now better known, of course, as Internazionale or just Inter. Before the Second World War, Milan were not the giants of the Italian game we know today. And they didn’t win their first national after the split until 1950/51. However, this heralded one of their best ever spells whilst led by Gunner Nordahl, a Swede by birth – an irony given the reasons for the split which formed Inter. Nordahl was one of the best players in the entire Italian league and netted two-hundred and ten goals in just 257 games. He is widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best, players to ever put on an AC Milan shirt. ![]() Although AC Milan retain a high pedigree for success, they have not been without their disappointing seasons in their history. They have been relegated to Serie B twice, once for taking part in game-fixing scandal during the 1980 season. A decade later, the team won four Serie A titles and two European Cups. Their total haul of 17 national titles was the second highest, behind Turin giants Juventus, until Inter’s recent run of success. Their seven European Cup wins, the last in 2007, is unsurpassed by any Italian side and is second overall behind Real Madrid/ Milan play at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (better known as the ‘San Siro’), sharing the stadium with Inter. Many of the world’s best players have graced the pitch there, from Nordahl and Italian legend Gianni Rivera via the famous Dutch trio of Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard to modern legend Paolo Maldini.
